UHKv3 Wish List: The Curious Case of Keyboard Excess

Thanks for your answer, I didn’t think about using macros! I’m gonna check it out.

I’m fairly new to all of this (I’ve discovered HE keyswitches principle like few days ago), do you have some documentation that explains words like SOCD and null bind)? Cheers

EDIT: null-bind seems to be related to some sort of sticky key if I understand well, nice to do some fast strafing

To be clear, the UHK can’t do variable distance actuation, but the macro I linked to basically makes it to where you can hold “A” and “D” while strafing, but instead of causing you to stop, it will just activate the most recent direction pressed. For example, if you are holding “A”, and then tap and release “D”, there’s no pause in movement. That’s one of the biggest reasons people are hyped about HE switches. As for the terminology, there’s a ton of different terms, but their meaning is pretty similar. I suggest you go through that whole thread in my last comment if you wanna know more. there’s a LOT of info in there. If you need help getting that macro to work, I can show you how I have it set up on my board. I had to make some minor adjustments to get it to work with the “A” & “D” keys. I’m definitely not very savvy with the smart macro stuff, but I might be able to help some. If I can’t help, someone else surely will.

I just copied this from Google’s AI Overview:

"Null binds and SOCD are both related to how keyboards handle opposing directional key presses, but they differ in how they do it:

  • Null binds

A script or macro that prevents two opposing directions from being pressed at the same time. Null binds are often banned in tournaments.

  • SOCD

Stands for “Simultaneous Opposing Cardinal Directions” and refers to the physical act of pressing two opposing directions at the same time.

Some keyboards, like Wooting’s, have features that can help with SOCD, such as:

  • Rappy Snappy

Uses the keyboard’s analog signal to adjust the actuation point of opposing directional keys

  • Snappy Tappy

Activates “last input priority”, which means that when two opposing directional keys are pressed at the same time, the keyboard will only activate the last pressed key"

Yeah my edit was crossed by your post, I’ve read the thread and some answers were in it. Your post did the rest ; thanks for those explanations, it is much clearer now and sorry for the thread hijacking everybody!

Magnetic usb cables are a great solution for this, leaving the male end in the connector as the wire effortless breaks free

This! Yes I would very much like the v3 to ditch the recessed usb trench and do something like this

…my wishlist for the next UHK…

  • drop BLE HID support

When it works its solid for me! I think ya’ll have done a wonderful job so far building the UHK80 from the ground up, most companies would cheap out and I’d have to like flip a switch every time i wanted to go between wired and ble. Now I can control my media on my home PC while working on my work pc in the blink of an eye!

Rough day?
I’m sure you’ll figure it out soon enough.

More like rough half a year .

Just keep chippin’ away. Looks like you made a decent dent yesterday. :face_with_bags_under_eyes:

Is v3 in the works already? I understand company’s hesitance on divulging this info, but if someone were to buy a v2 today, would they be sad about it in say… a year?

I’d just assume UGL always has something up their sleeve. Aside from not wanting to give the competition a “leg up”, they probably have your best interests at heart as well. You can’t very well afford a new UHK if you blow all your money on new socks

Yes, but hardly in a year.

Wait…
Does “hardly in a year” mean sooner, or later?

Later.

I’d vote for adding the HE version for the upcoming 60v3, or even better, 80v2, so it is more universal, plus solid software support, so that it can become an ultimate gaming keyboard as well. HE is everywhere now, and there is no way to deny it as the future of mech keyboards. This also allows for some macro based on the amount of pressure on the key, but that perhaps will be difficult to get right and might end up being a gimmick - needs some careful research.

As others mention, some improvements to the sound profile and more “thock” are welcome, too. Usually, it is just a matter of adding a few layers of foam/tape/etc that gives you 80% there. Maybe a gasket mount could be an option, too? See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE47u4PQGk0 as an example.

I’d also like to see some additional partnerships with the keycap creators, so it is easier to find a replacement set for the stock caps in the EU, as I am personally a fan of flatter profiles like XDA or KAT. Yuzu seems to be great, but it’s a 20-day delivery time to the NL… Perhaps Akko? They have already established a warehouse in Germany.

In any case… Cheers, and thanks for the fantastic products. Typed this on an old UHK60v1 I borrowed from a friend, while waiting for my UHK80 to arrive. Barely using my mouse now due to how epic the trackball with a metal ball is.

Thanks for your kind words!

I agree that contactless switches are the future, and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUbKhUBs6XI is the best summarizing video I’ve seen, but I don’t think mechanical switches are dead yet. The selection should mature, especially clicky switches.

Even if switch selection were plentiful, redesigning the hardware would be too much of a hassle. The next UHK model already contains many changes.

We don’t plan to alter the sound profile because we rarely get such suggestions, and it’d complicate manufacturing.

Providing additional keycap sets is not financially viable for us because the UHK is too niche.

I recently put some poron foam in the bottom of my UHK80, and it improved the sound quite a bit. It still has most of its original character, but the hollowness is gone, and it’s a little quieter. IMO, that’s all the UHK80 needs, but I actually like em clacky and loud . The UHK80 disassembly is a breeze, so it’s a quick job. I will say, there’s not much wiggle room under the PCB, so don’t use anything too thick in there. Even the 2mm poron foam I linked to was a tight fit, so make sure you carve out room for the sensitive bits.

I like flat profiles as well. I have a few sets from Yuzu and FK Custom, and I have to say, it’s well worth the wait…

Clicky HE switches with variable height activation seems extremely bizarre to me :face_with_raised_eyebrow:. I just hope someone makes a super heavy 80-90gf option. I don’t wanna give up my Kailh Crystal Box Navies; you’d have to pry them from my cold, arthritic hands.
