I’ve used these all evening, and tipping is not an issue for me so far. Your mileage may vary.
To achieve roughly the same hand height with the UHK80, the right side should be set one notch lower than the left. The left half’s angle will still be a little steeper than the right, but you don’t even notice it after the first day or so.
The UHK60 is likely to tip much easier, as the palm rests are quite a bit heavier due to their separate metal mounting plate, and the thick solid wood. The UHK80’s palm rests have a very thin wood top. The inside is mostly hollow, other than the super lightweight batteries. So, basically the UHK80 could be extended more, and would still be less tippy. Especially if you did something similar to Karel’s hollow bracing in the front (or side closest to the user
).
Honestly though, they’re both great boards, so you can’t really go wrong either way.
That’s gotta be one of the most brutal looking boards I’ve ever seen
. The bare wood and brown keycaps make it look like you picked it up in a hardware store.

I kinda hope you keep it like that
The chef’s kiss would be if you made the palm rest into a bed of nails…
I don’t think that the weight of the wood of the palm rest is an issue at all. The riser is very heavy by itself. A bit of extra wood won’t mean much.
The wrist rests in the picture were just a test. I might finish them up and treat them and sell them to someone now that I’ve made them, but I’ve got another pair in the works for myself.
The keys were supposed to be a deeper brown, the same brown as the key switches, but there was a mix-up or something at the producers. Then I got used to them, and I’m in no hurry to replace them.
I was just goofin around. It’s clear you’re just trying to help out, and I definitely appreciate that. ![]()
It seems like the smart move would be to buy the UHK80 – more stable, more refined. But somehow the simplicity of the 60 has an allure I can’t resist. I’m going to try it with the official palm pads for a few days, but I’ll reach out again if I need help extending them
Putting in an order now. Thank you all very much for the help!
For a 60 or an 80? ![]()
Ah, right, the 60. I too am fond of it :-).
UHK60 and UHK80 are both excellent keyboards.
I still think the driving decisions between them are:
- do you want/need the extra keys (cursor keys, ins/del, …)?
- do you want/need wireless functionality? (Don’t count on bluetooth; that’s currently not stable. Use Dongle instead if you need wireless.)
I don’t see size of riser and/or palm rests as a strong decision factor.
I’ve got somewhat big hands, so for the sake of ergonomics, I’d love a larger palm rest option for the UHK60 and 80. One or two more centimeters would be good. I’ll say that the wooden pads on the UHK80 are an improvement over the old rubber ones though.
The soft part of my palms sit right on the bottom edges of the palm rests. With the rubber pads, my hands would rock outwardly, and I’d lose my homerow/thumb placement. That still happens with the wooden ones, but it’s a little better. The wood is just stiff enough to catch the edge of my wrist bones, and I feel a little more anchored.
I decided on the UHK60, because part of the draw of this keyboard was the remapping and layers. If I’m “hacking” the layout I want, then why bother with the extra keys? I guess it seemed like if I got the 80 key I wouldn’t bother with the customizations.
Anyway, I am very sad that I don’t get the 2 lower mod keys per side and the extended frame that the uhk80 has. Would be awesome if the UHK60 got those improvements.
The extra thumb keys are also the main thing I miss on my 60. Don’t really even use the full 60 as it is, see my recent config showcase. But those two additional keys would be very nice to have!
I see from your photos that you have the extra button module. Does that not help? I did read somewhere from someone that they are a bit of a reach.
I got that module and the trackpoint, though I have high hopes for the keyboard mouse making the trackpoint obsolete.
The closest button is good for me. The other two are a bit of a reach, but the mouse buttons on the cluster are great, actually, so it’s three good buttons for me.
When I first got the keyboard from the crowdfund campaign, without modules, I promptly stopped using a mouse, except for gaming, but the trackball works better for me than the keyboard bindings did.
Exactly same for me!
I have a UHK80, a UHK60v1 & v2, and I actually use a lot of the same mappings on all of them. For example, I go back and forth using the arrows on the Mod layer and the navigation column, depending on the situation. I try to design my configs to be mostly inter-compatible.
Honestly, if you have a UHK of any kind, there’s no way you’re not gonna tweak the heck out of it
.
