UHK80 keys fail intermittently

I’ve had my UHK80 for a few months. Last night I noticed a few keys failing. Specifically, a set of keys on the right half do not work on every key press, and if i hold the key down, it will only emit a letter intermittently. (Noticeably lower than other keys). Some are worse than others.

  • H (the slowest, worst)
  • M
  • ,
  • .
  • /
  • Uparrow
  • Right shift

For right shift, i held it down and tapped A. Should be AAAAAAAAAAAA, got “AaaaaAaAaaAaAaAaaAAaAaAaAaaa”. And holding down A would not repeat (perhaps detecting shift was on and off?). Alt and Ctl could have issues too, didn’t test those.

The other letter keys seem fine, and there’s no trouble on the left side of the keyboard at all.

Things I tried:

  • I upgraded firmware from 15.2 to 16.0, no luck.
  • I removed any USB hubs or C-to-A adapters and plugged directly in to my laptop
  • I tried another computer and OS.
  • I swapped the switch of H (bad) and J (good), and H remained bad.

Any tricks or other things to look at? Thanks.

Try reseating the switches. Pull the switch out, bend its legs a little - so that they end up tensioned against the side of the hotswap socket - and put them back in.

Full(ish) set of things to tey and consider is at Troubleshooting repeated and missing keystrokes - Ultimate Hacking Keyboard .

If only certain positions are affected, then it is almost surely not a firmware issue.

The affected switches seem to reside in the same key matrix row, which is suspicious.

Please reset your configuration and try to reproduce the issue. If you can, we should probably recall your UHK 80.

Thanks for the responses. I tried swapping bending the legs out a little, no luck. And I also swapped the switches around, and the problem doesn’t follow the switch.

I reset te configuration, and the problem persists. I’ll reach out for a recall or other sort of repair.

Thanks!

I noticed a similar behaviour (although with other keys), and once I unplug and replug my TouchPad module, all keys work.

I created a bug report.

I can reproduce @maexxx’s issue with his config.

So far I can tell that I can reproduce it with his config, and can’t reproduce it with default or mine. The issue is present after any full config load - i.e., after reboot or saving config from Agent (…) but goes away after first keymap switch, which is basically a partial config load. (Module reconnection triggers keymap reload because different modules can have different bindings.)

I don’t think the two problems are related though.

On thing i found is that a loose connection with one of the modules totally messes up the keyboard. Keys are missed its super unresponsive, etc. remove any modules and then see if the problem still occurs.

Alas, I have no modules on my keyboard to unplug.

That got me ones or twice. More with the UHK80 that the UHK60s, the occasional tightening of screws helps!
