The photos are not very representative (very bad light) and indeed the oil wasn’t the best choice. It works and would look much better if I reoiled them, but hardwax turned out to be a much better finish choice.
The oil dissipated quickly from these. Areas that are touched lost a lot of saturation over the two months of usage, as can be seen especially on the left half.
I have made a couple spare, and may make some more in future. I doubt actual profitability, so this is probably going to remain a hobby/experiment initiative.
Given feedback about palm rests of uhk80 being too short, I have also designed a larger version, so that is available too.
Anyone who wants a standard size walnut is advised to wait, as an official product is planned and is likely to be superior in quality.
Those look so good!
(I’d be all over 'em if recent political nonsense hadn’t destroyed my finances for the next few months.)
Have you tried the longer version with a riser? I thought about longer palm rests, but I think I’d probably also need to extend the base to keep it stable. Not sure how to go about that yet.
Based on a quick test, I don’t think there are going to be stability issues. I am more afraid of how to keep the palm rest in place when force is applied at the edge - I assume it to be attached with a double sided tape, which has its limits.
I can’t easily test it properly, as I have all my keyboards modified in a way that makes them incompatible .
Well, I see the contradiction you are pointing out, but precedent says that links to third-party accessories (e.g., custom keycap manufacturers) are welcome ;-).
However, unless you are specifically interested in the large size or specific look or customizations, I strongly recommend you to bump the customer support and ask about options of replacement with the official wooden palm rests.
(You can actually already see those wooden palm rests in recent uhk social media posts, so by this point my guess would be that “soon” actually is in a forseeable future.)
Just got the email regarding the wooden palm rests for the UHK 80 and I have to say that they look great! Really like how the wood meets the enclosure. Looks real classy.
I go through phases where I stop using my UHK 60v2 but then come back to it. There is just something about it that I really like.
