Wooden palmrests for UHK80

Yesterday’s procrastination.

Oiled black walnut. From the bottom side they are flat, and attached with a double-sided tape.

(This is not an official product prototype, although I might start making some variant as a private initiative.)

Absolutely beautiful Karel!
That completely changes the whole vibe.

I would sign up for this for sure! I really like the wood palmrests for my UHK60. And black walnut is inspired - would look great.

Looks gorgeous! If I would have or want palm rests I would love those.

I would absolutely buy these if they were available for UHK80.

damn.. Even with my bubbling rubber palm rest on my 80 I am still a rubber believer… But this does make my conviction faulty just a little.

Irresistible. While still undecided over the UHK-80, this would win me over. :brown_heart:

@kareltucek, what keycaps do you have on? It looks a bit like MT3 especially the legends font. But I suspect it’s not as tall.

These are mt3s

Do you have a battery? Or are these taped onto the plastic insert?

I’m tempted to make these when I have a free weekend. Did you trace the rubber pads?

Yes, I have battery.

No, I have removed the plastic inserts. Thee pads are taped on the edges of the metal switch plate.

Kind of. I had traced earlier hard plastic 3d printed prototypes of the pads.

Another (cheaper, faster and more sustainable) option is to make them out of 5mm plywood. Especially with a laser cutter it may be an efficient way of producing them, although the resulting effect isn’t as posh as with these. (Have one such pair in the office, just haven’t got around to take pictures yet .)

Nice! Can you comment you have made the palm rest? Also which key caps are you using? Really good looking keyboard. Congratulations!

Take a walnut board. Cut it to shape. Sand it down. Oil it. Give it one more rub with a high grit sandpaper. (Should I elaborate?)

Keycaps are MT3s. (Yes, they are the main reason why the keyboard looks gorgeous. To fully cover the board as in the picture, two sets are needed - a normal one and an ortho one. But it also covers a uhk60 at the same time .)

I can’t work the feel of the small round cups of MT3, and I am also not the biggest fan of OEM. I find both profiles distracting as they present a quite high and sharp ridge on the corners and rim of the keycaps. My fingers don’t like gliding from cap to cap over those ridges. I am an SA addict, and Cherry, XDA and DSA also work fine for me.

To get back on topic: I am sure some decent black SA caps would also look gorgeous on the walnut UHK80! (If I only had some of those wooden palm rests… - I am really bad at woodwork.)

Out of curiosity, which oil did you use? I am making my own rests out of oak, and I was just going to give them some linseed oil or linseed based table oil mixture, but if you have some other recommendation which works well, I would be interested in hearing it.

I’d really like some walnut palm rests as well. I’m not terrible with woodworking, but I don’t have a suitable shop for it ATM, and using power tools in a wheelchair is a PITA. So instead, I’m gonna try my hand at making leather pads. I don’t have any experience with leatherwork, but I’ll give it a go anyway.

What do you all think? Any tips/suggestions before I get started? I don’t have much material, so I’m hoping to avoid mistakes…

Waiting on the new yellow UHK80 case so I can decide which color leather to use (these are a bit darker IRL).

I like the lighter one (although it may get stained more quickly). How would you plan to pad the leather underneath?

using power tools in a wheelchair is a PITA

It is doable without power tools. (Have done it that way actually.)

Out of curiosity, which oil did you use?

I used almond table oil.

Leather will tend to absorb moisture and oils from hands and will start smelling over time.

So maybe do a research on some suitable surface finish?
